I teach 1st grade and I always engage my students in learning. If I did not do this, I would lose their attention very quickly. I also use a lot of the quantum teachings. I remind my students of the keys and how we can learn more and make our brains grow. On page 34, this book talks about engaging students, motivating students, and getting more out of students. I think if we expect more, then students will give more. We have to do this in a fun, exciting, positive way. Students like to be challenged. I also use a lot of music in my classroom with motion. My students seem to learn better with this technique.

  1. Trying to cover all the standards and making sure the students not only get information that is required but are engaged in learning is an ongoing quest of mine. In chapter 3, Larry Ainsworth recommends the use of Power Standards that will assist the student in getting the 'meat' of a lesson and taking it to the next level. The question is posed on p.42 of how I would like to shift covering information in a lesson to a more valuing depth. Mr. Ainsworth suggests spending the most time on standards that are more critical. He also makes a statment about a method of covering the standards that I can see as attainable in that we take the standard and turn it into a question. From that question the student is guided in the direction of comprehending the core resoning of the lesson.
I agree with Tammy who commented that 'if we expect more out of our students they will give more'. When we have students engaged in learning and they think we are having fun in the process, I feel as though my time with them has been successful.
